SDI-12 Box Firmware Updater

Update a FloraPulse SDI-12 sensor box over its own sensor wires — from this page, with the FloraPulse SDI-12 uploader. Nothing to install.

FloraPulse SDI-12 boxes shipped from October 2026 onward carry a built-in bus bootloader: they accept new firmware through the same two wires they measure on. This page sends the current production firmware to your box and verifies it end to end. Boxes shipped earlier do not have the bootloader and cannot be updated this way — if the tool reports that, nothing was changed.

What you need

Never update a box while it is connected to a logger. A METER ZL6 powers the sensor for about one second per minute — the update needs continuous power for 12 to 15 minutes. Update on the uploader, then put the box back on the logger.

Keep this tab in the foreground and everything plugged in until it says CONFIRMED. A new image that is never confirmed is automatically rolled back by the box's bootloader — that is a safety feature, not a fault. If the tool ends with anything other than CONFIRMED, leave everything connected and run it again.

Run the update

firmware: loading…
Idle. Clip the box (red, white, black), click "Connect & check" and pick the uploader's serial port (USB-SERIAL CH340). The page finds the box at whatever address it has and tells you what it will do before anything starts.

This tool needs Chrome or Edge on a computer (it talks to the uploader through Web Serial, which this browser does not provide). The page is otherwise just instructions — open it again from a desktop browser.

Plugging in or connecting to the uploader restarts the box — that's normal. The update takes 12 to 15 minutes; the box keeps its serial number and calibration through it.

Every connect also checks the uploader's own firmware. If it is older than the current version, the page updates it first, automatically (about a minute, over the same USB cable — the uploader restarts, which restarts the box too), and then goes on to the box update.

You can work in another window beside it, but keep this tab showing and the laptop plugged in: the page can only keep the laptop awake while it is on screen. The tab's title shows the progress, and when the update ends the page plays a chime and shows a desktop notification (your browser asks once, when you click Start, whether it may).

Several boxes? Switch to Several boxes above and clip the boxes you have, in parallel, colour to colour: boxes that already carry a number can all go on together, boxes at address 0 go on one at a time. Click Connect & find boxes — the page scans every address in about eight seconds and lists what it finds, and a lone box at 0 is given the next free number (write it on the box). Clip the next box beside the others, click Add box, and so on. A box may restart when another is clipped in; between runs that is harmless. Every box is listed, including one that needs nothing (already current, or too old to update) — it simply is not run. Boxes made together often carry the same probe name; that is expected and never a problem. When every box is on, click Start updates: they run one after another, 12 to 15 minutes each, and each box goes back to address 0 as it finishes — unclip finished boxes whenever you like, and clip nothing new while an update is running. A box that fails stays at its number until you click Retry the failed or Reset addresses & finish. Boxes you had already given their own addresses for a logger port are updated where they sit and left at those addresses. A few boxes run from the uploader's own power; for a larger batch power them from an always-on 12 V supply such as a Campbell logger's (not a ZL6, which powers sensors only a second a minute), with the logger's own program stopped, and clip only the white and black wires.

What the outcomes mean

ResultWhat to do
CONFIRMEDDone. Put the box back on its logger.
Already currentThe box already runs the latest firmware. Nothing was changed.
Not startedYou clicked Disconnect at the check, or the uploader was unplugged. Nothing was changed.
No bus updateThis box predates the bootloader (shipped before October 2026) and cannot be updated over the wire. Nothing was changed.
UNCONFIRMEDThe new image is on probation. Leave the box on the uploader and run the tool again; do not put it on a logger. If it stays unconfirmed, copy the log and email us.
Reverted / not appliedThe box protected itself and still runs its previous firmware. Safe — copy the log and email us before retrying.
FailedThe transfer did not complete; the box is unchanged. Check wiring and the address, then run it again.
