FloraPulse in research papers, pine trees, hemp, peppers, tomatoes, and corn.

This month we bring you more good news! Initial sensor testing in corn, tomato, hemp and peppers shows good results. Some cool videos and pictures from our users in forestry. And two new research papers came out using FloraPulse in apple and cotton.

Success in small crops – corn, tomato, hemp and peppers giving good water potential data.

In collaboration with UC Davis scientists, this month we installed the new small microtensiometers into truly tiny trunks and crops that are not woody. The results so far look very promising. Pressure chamber comparisons will be performed in the coming weeks. See above the actual sensor installations and data. And keeping up with California tradition, we find even more ways to have fun with cannabis

FloraPulse Forest Installation

FloraPulse users in forestry

Check out our user-generated content! We first have a video by Daphna Uni installing FloraPulse microtensiometers into a pine tree. We’re super excited to see how the sensors perform in pine – first test, fingers crossed! The main concern in pine is that resin ducts will clog the sensor and prevent measurement, but so far so good.

Secondly, researchers Ruth Magh, Christina Hackmann and Sharath Paligi took selfies installing FloraPulse microtensiometers way up in the canopy at Hainich National Park in Germany. Brave souls, we commend their efforts, from the comfort of ground level.

New peer-reviewed research

Using micro-tensiometers to manage water stress to maximize fruit size of apple orchards “stem water potential was effectively measured in apple trees with the MT (microtensiometer)”. The authors used microtensiometers to successfully differentiate between irrigation treatments.

Monitoring cotton water status with microtensiometers – “Our results demonstrate that the microtensiometer-derived Ψstem closely follows known diurnal patterns of Ψleaf, tracking with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and responding to variations in irrigation levels and soil moisture content.”

Featured Distributor: OLIVOS riego

Meet Andres Olivos from OLIVOS riego! Based out of Rengo, Chile and with over 40 years in the market, OLIVOS is a trusted brand in the manufacture and deployment of irrigation systems and technology. They also run their own orchards, so they know growers needs from the inside out. We were pleased to host the OLIVOS guys for lunch during their visit this past month (Andres and Manuel in front are from OLIVOS, the rest of us are from FloraPulse). After collaborating with OLIVOS in sales and research for 4 years now, we are excited to soon begin our 5th season in the Southern Hemisphere.

Andres lives in Rengo, Chile with his wife and kids, and has the cutest backyard vineyard. He got his Master’s and PhD in Horticulture and Agronomy from our neighbor UC Davis! He’s been known to enjoy pisco from time to time. If you are based in Chile or nearby, contact the OLIVOS team for quotes on FloraPulse systems!
